Chess Position Practice #2: Candidate Moves

March 27, 2010 at 8:15 pm

This video series will focus on analyzing chess positions, and generating candidate move orders from the position without moving the pieces or using computer analysis. The goal is to improve the ability to generate lines and variations mentally during a game, and to try to come up with a move that either maintains equality on the board, or paves the way for a slight positional edge. I recommend pausing the video at the appropriate time and generating your own candidate moves. If this is something new you are working on improving, it’s recommended that you write down your lines and over time you will be able to do this all in your head during a match. (more)

Chess Challenge #1 – Play the Grandmaster!

March 26, 2010 at 8:02 pm

The general idea is for you to guess the moves in a grandmaster chess game. I am going to ask you to pause the video after every move black plays for you to take some time and think about what move the grandmaster played. For every move you get right, you get a point. There will be bonus points throughout the video, and if you find a potential move that either maintains the advantage or improves the position, post a comment and that will count as a point as well. You can only get one point per move unless otherwise stated in the video. I recommend you use a real chess set throughout the video, or chess software (without the chess engine running). Legends of Chess #1: Boris Gulko

March 24, 2010 at 8:02 pm

This video series focuses on legendary players (both past and present) from the world of chess. The first video in this series talks about Grandmaster Boris Gulko, one of the very few people in the world that holds a positive score against one of the greatest chess champions of all time, Gary Kasparov. Aside from chess, Boris Gulko has led an extremely interesting life! He won the USSR Chess Championships in 1977. Sadly, as an avid anti-communist living in the USSR, his chess career was put on hold when both Boris and his wife were banned from competitive play due to their political beliefs. During this time he was also arrested and beaten by KGB agents for his political views. Finally, in 1986, he was allowed to leave Russia and moved to the United States of America. Amazingly, he then went on to win the United States Chess Championship, so along with all of his other trials and successes, he is the only person to ever win both the USSR and USA chess championships. A political activist, a brilliant chess player, and an overall amazing human being, this video takes a look at Grandmaster Boris Gulko, one of the living legends of the Chess world.
